"Instant approval" refers to the decision, not the money. Understanding which stage you are in tells you whether to wait or to chase.
The four stages
1. Prequalification — 1 to 3 minutes. A soft credit pull returns estimated rates. No score impact, no commitment.
2. Full application and decision — minutes to 1 business day. A hard pull plus automated underwriting. Most online lenders decide in under 15 minutes; clean files are approved instantly, borderline files route to a human.
3. Verification — 1 to 2 business days. Income documents, bank statements, identity, sometimes an employer call. This is where nearly all delay lives.
4. Funding — same day to 3 business days. ACH transfers post on banking days only. An approval Friday evening usually means money Tuesday.
By lender type
| Lender | Decision | Funding |
|---|---|---|
| Online lender | Minutes | 1-3 business days, some same day |
| Credit union | Same day to 2 days | 1-3 business days |
| National bank | 1-3 business days | 1-5 business days |
Credit unions are often slower to decide and more forgiving on credit. Online lenders are fastest but price risk more aggressively.
The five most common delays
1. Mismatched information. An address or employer that does not match your documents triggers manual review.
2. Unverifiable income. Cash deposits, new self-employment, or a job started last month.
3. Missing statement pages. Lenders require full statements; partial uploads restart the clock.
4. Bank account issues. A newly opened account or one with recent overdrafts.
5. Weekend and holiday timing. ACH does not move on non-banking days.
How to get funded fastest
- Apply Monday through Wednesday morning.
- Have all documents ready as PDFs before you start (checklist here).
- Use a bank account at least 90 days old with clean activity.
- Answer verification calls — an unreturned call is the most common avoidable delay.
- Enroll in autopay during application; some lenders fund faster and discount the rate.
If you need money today
Same-day options are limited and usually cost more. Realistic routes are a credit union that cuts a check in branch, an existing credit card cash advance, or lenders that specifically advertise same-day ACH with an early cutoff. See same-day loan options.
