Both give you cash quickly. That is where the similarity ends.
The structural difference
A personal loan is an installment product. You borrow a fixed amount, repay it in equal monthly payments over 12-60 months, and the rate is expressed as a true APR — typically 7%-36%.
A payday loan is a single-payment product. You borrow $200-$1,000 and repay the whole balance plus a flat fee on your next payday, usually 14 days later. A $15 fee per $100 borrowed sounds small. Annualized, it is about 391% APR.
The numbers
| | Payday loan | Personal loan |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | $500 | $500 |
| Term | 14 days | 12 months |
| Cost structure | $75 fee | 30% APR |
| Total repaid if paid once | $575 | $585 |
| Total if rolled 5 times | $875 | n/a |
Paid off on the first due date, they look comparable. The problem is that the CFPB has found the majority of payday loans are rolled over or re-borrowed. Each rollover adds another full fee to a balance that never shrinks. That is the debt trap, and it is structural, not a matter of borrower discipline.
Approval differences
Payday lenders generally require only a bank account, ID, and proof of income — no credit check. Personal lenders check credit but many serve scores down to 550-580, and prequalification is soft-pull.
If your score rules out a mainstream personal loan, the honest ranking of alternatives is:
1. Payment plan directly with the biller (medical and utility providers almost always offer one).
2. Credit union Payday Alternative Loan (PAL): capped at 28% APR, $200-$2,000.
3. Cash advance from an existing credit card (~25%-30% APR plus a fee) — expensive but far below payday pricing.
4. Employer earned-wage access, if offered.
5. Payday loan, only as a genuine last resort with a concrete single-payment repayment plan.
State rules matter
Payday lending is banned or rate-capped in roughly 18 states plus D.C. Where it is legal, caps on fees, rollovers, and loan counts vary widely. Check your state's rules before assuming an advertised offer is even lawful where you live.
Bottom line
If you can qualify for an installment personal loan, the math is not close. Reserve payday products for situations where the alternative is a shut-off notice and you can definitively clear the balance on the first due date.
